On my present trip to Bucharest (summer 2010), I am experiencing a strong discrepancy between what I am hearing and observing in some environments, and what I am hearing and observing in others. The article below, purely based on personal perceptions, is offered as food for thought.
In both social and economic dimensions, it seems that we are in the process of witnessing the splitting of Romania into two relatively distinct entities. Indeed, for residents in this country, two different and sometimes complementary economic realities are in the process of dividing the country into two substantially different personal, professional, and social systems. To name these two emerging Romanian realities, one can be perceived as mainstream Romania, or Romania of the past, and the other could optimistically be called the Romania of the future.
